Unleashed
In the Old Testament, we see the Holy Spirit intervene or come on those who were leaders, prophets, or given a special assignment by God. Hebrews 11 details the Old Testament heroes of the Christian faith. Many times, their stories become romanticized and lose their significance as we become acquainted with them. We’ve heard the story of Moses pleading with Pharoah and of the creatures peacefully gathering to board Noah’s ark, but we often overlook the magnitude of faith and obedience that was required to do these humanly insurmountable tasks. We are told of John the Baptist, who lived in the wilderness munching on bugs and honey, but we gloss over the turmoil he faced as an outcast and the sacrifices he made as he painstakingly paved the way for Jesus’ ministry. We say, “things are just so different now. We don’t have the power they did.” But is that true? The same Holy Spirit that aided Moses, Noah, John the Baptist, and Jesus is the same one that is alive in believers today. It is the SAME Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. I have been asking myself, “Why then, does the power of the Spirit feel so much smaller within me?” I believe this is because many believers, myself included, don’t give the Spirit the proper room to grow. We box Him up, nice and neat, and give Him a place in our lives that feels comfortable and tidy— a place where He can’t interfere too much. What would happen if we were willing to unleash the full power of the Holy Spirit, unhindered by our fear or need for comfort? What if we let Him decide where we fit into His plan instead of us deciding where He fits into ours? We have drowned out the voice of the Holy Spirit with our anxieties, schedule, and things that don’t have eternal significance. I’m ready to turn up the power of the Holy Spirit and give Him control in my life and watch what happens. This is my prayer today and I hope it will become yours too! — H. Brunett @1000HourswithJesus
